The Essential Homer translated and edited by Stanley Lombardo, depicts the story of the famous Trojan war. Helen even though not being a central character in the story her role throughout the epic is important. She is created as a suffering figure who is constantly striving for independence and a sense of belongingness among the many different restraints that she faces. Even with the limited amounts of appearances in the epic each encounter with her character the reader is able to learn more about her personality and the way her character evolves in obtaining autonomy and being part of the society she feels excluded from. Helen is time after time blamed as the women for who the famous Trojan war was fought for.
In the 1900’s African Americans were still not experiencing the freedom that they were expecting. Langston Hughes was one of the most successful African American writers during the Harlem Renaissance who wanted to make a difference. Langston Hughes conveys the same central idea through two unique poems. The central idea that Langston Hughes portrays through “I Too”and “Dream Variations” is that we are all the same inside, no matter the color of our skin. “I Too” written by Langston Hughes, during The Harlem Renaissance, depicts that African Americans during the 1920’s are still being persecuted even though they are supposed to be free.
Most poems are written by men, yet this poem was written by a woman. It is a story about how her husband left her. She has no idea why and she wants to know why it had to happen to her. At first, she wants him to be happy, but hten she doesn’t. She realizes that if he left her and left her to lament and mourn, then he shouldn’t be able to be happy either.
One event or person can be described in two ways when there are two writers, two points of view, and two purposes for writing. The poems “Paul Revere's Ride” and Paul Revere's “Deposition” are examples of this. The narrative poem, “Paul Revere's Ride”, by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, is a poem about Paul Revere's historic ride in the Boston area in 1775 warning the people that the British were coming. The poem was written in 1860 to inspire generations of children. The “deposition” by Paul Revere provides a detailed account of his observations and actions during his ride, including his interaction with the patriots and the events leading to him warning the people about the British troops.

In the age of Romanticism, using nature to express ones feelings was one thing that poets loved to do. Focusing on the “London” by William Blake and “Mutability” by P.B. Shelley, one will see the comparison of how both authors used nature and emotion to depict the situations and experiences that they saw during this time. But meanwhile, the emotion and comparison to nature is not always positive, neither is it always negative and in these two poems one can see the differences. Romanticism was a period of time in the 18th century where literary movements was such an ideal trend in Europe. For the most part romanticism was about individualism and human emotions and not so much about power of the hierarchy over the population.
But when the future of Helen and Troy’s relationship comes into play Martinez no longer holds our hands as we dip our toes in the cool water. Now we must sink or swim as Helen lays herself bare to the confines of society’s expectations when she says “We don’t live in a culture where regular guys, even amazing one, have seven-foot tall girlfriends… It’d be different with the genders reversed. Everybody gets beauty and the beast. But this thing between us, it’d be weird to most people” (256).
Refugee History: Creating Understanding. Historically, one hallmark of human culture is the unfortunate distinction of how we treat the most vulnerable in our society. Furthermore, in western culture, the stories of those abused (including harmed children) are overlooked in exchange for ignorance surrounded by a privileged life. To learn more about overlooked historical events, an excellent read is the fictional novel, Refugee.
The fourth and final paragraph compares Helen to Penelope to show how the patriarchy is so quick to put cruel diminishing labels on woman. Finally I have a work cited page containing the Odyssey, where I found all the supporting quotes for my paper. Penelope is one of several woman characters in
Penelope’s subjectivity is used to retell her side of The Odyssey. The audience is able to understand her true feelings, thoughts, emotions and remarks in respect to Odysseus being gone for so long, the killing of the suitors and maids and her views toward Helen. Penelope shows us the despise and hatred she has toward Helen but her need to know any news about her is seen throughout the book. Helen’s name appears several times and Penelope on occasions compares herself with Helen. Helen, “of course was very beautiful…
There are very few common factors in these poems. One major factor is Helen’s beauty. Her beauty is the main objective. Helen is beautiful and how they feel about her is what differs. In each poem they use literary devices, more so in Poe’s poem.

In Mythology the power of beauty has always been for profound persuasion. The women in most myths are typically shown as trophies that warriors accommodate after battle. In the myth of the “Trojan War” Helena fell in love with the Trojan Prince Paris. Paris took Helena back to Troy which angered her husband at the time Agamemnon, thus began the gruesome war. In the painting Helen of Troy, Evelyn de Morgan uses the immaculate beauty of Helen to show that people can easily be distracted by beauty.
