Comparing Two Poems: Helen Of Troy By Hilda Doolittle

The two poems describing Helen of Troy are very contradicting. The first poem, written by Edgar Allen Poe, describes her to be a beauty. The second poem, written by Hilda Doolittle, describes her to be a menace. These two opinions are very different from each other in many different ways.
The tones used for Helen are almost antonyms. Poe uses a preaching tone towards Helen. He compares her to a boat, something that the Greeks had treasured since it was their source for food. Throughout the poem, he makes Helen the beauty of the world. Unlike Poe’s tone, Doolittle uses a scorning tone towards her. Although she does say that she was beautiful, she claims all of Greece hates her. She also says she has still white eyes, like a corpse. The poem
