The texts I have chosen to study are, Slumdog Millionaire directed by Danny Boyle, Rambo directed by Sylvester Stallone, Dulce Et Decorum Est written by Wilfred Owen and Once Were Warriors written by Alan Duff. Through these 4 texts violence is portrayed through a main character and their experiences as both of an aggressor or a victim. I felt that each of these texts had significant representations of violence that related to the norm in modern day society. John Rambo is a former United States Army Special Forces soldier, whom lives in Thailand in a remote village near the Burmese border. He has skills from his previous life as an x Special Forces solder in which he puts to use when he is hired to help rescue a group of missionaries that have been captured by the Burmese army. Like Javed from Slumdog millionaire, and Jake from Once Were Warriors, Sylvester Stallone also demonstrates violence through the character of Rambo. Although violence is demonstrated through Rambo towards the aggressors, the Burmese army. This is shown when Rambo uses violence upon a solder in the Burmese army when going to rescue a woman missionary about to be raped. Rambo’s physicality in this scene is standout with the aggressor feature of the sweaty singlet clung to his skin. His large broad shoulders, physique and muscles, portraying him to be powerful and able to inflict violence as he rips out the throat of the Burmese soldier. Not only does violence manifest itself through character, but it is also shown through setting in this film, although the setting of war is portrayed in a sense that it is more glorified compared to the war in Dulce et decorum est where war is deglamourized. The idea of war is significant as it is related to the modern day society where war is a constant factor in some areas. This is a connection between the texts and modern day society. The film is set in the Vietnam bush in a war zone with violence portrayed through gruesome images of people caged, shot dead in water and on land, and villagers and children forced into the army.
