One of the themes I found for both films “Ratatouille” and “Burnt” was Women in the professional kitchen. The reason why I chose “Women in the professional kitchen” is because both movies show the actions, behaviors and skills of how a female works to reach their goals in their everyday life. Female chefs in the movie are Helene and Collette. They share similar ideas once by working with collages in the kitchen.
In the movie “Ratatouille”, the female role was Collette who’s working in Auguste Gusteau, who is under the control of Skinner who is her boss and owner of the restaurant. As the only female staff in the kitchen, she makes sure that she gets things done as perfectly so she doesn’t get pressured more by her head chef Adam Jones. She is being pressured on how fast she can prepare a meal upon a request. Unlike everyone else in the kitchen she shows more stamina and heart once it comes to preparing a dish perfectly. How can a woman’s profession be challenged in the kitchen? If you were the only female chef in the kitchen, you would sometimes need to man up and show yourself that you are tougher and have more charisma than the male chefs. In the real world only 15 percent of the women in total become head chefs and the rest are men. The female category might rise up in the next several years by another 15 or 20 percent of women becoming head chefs. They want to increase and dominate the culinary field by adding more women. If a man can do the entire toughest job in the world, a woman can do it too.
In both of the films, do women get the respect that they deserve in the professional kitchen? Comparing both films and reality, women get the respect once it comes to working hard and impressing your head chef and co-workers that you have the heart to be in the kitchen.
