In these two folk tales, “The Old Grandfather and his little Grandson “is retold by Leo Tolstoy and is a Russian folk tale. This folk tale tells us how the son and daughter-in-law mistreated the grandfather and later on how the Grandson makes them feel ashamed. In the second folk tale, “The Wise Old Woman”, is retold by Yoshika Uchida and is a Japanese folk tale. This folk tale tells us how an old woman wisdom to help to save the entire village from Lord Higa. In both folk tales the theme is similar that, “Our elders need to be treated with respect” In the first folk tale, “The Old Grandfather and his little Grandson”, the daughter-in-law and son are bothered and tired from old man breaking things in the house. The young farmer mother was old enough to get banished from the village but the farmer do not want her to mistreat her mother so he hiders her in a secret room in his house. One day, Lord Higa makes three demands to all of the villagers but all of the young men in the village think that it was impossible as everyone gave up and they realized that Lord Higa will conquer the village soon. But it was the wise Old Woman that solved all of the three challenges and saved the village. She gave Lord Higa a lesson that elderly people are wiser than the young people because they have faced many challenges in life and have experience how to do difficult things. The old woman got honored for her wisdom by young lord because without her the village would had been conquered and destroyed. In the first folk tale, “The Old Grandfather and his little Grandson” it was the Grandson who makes his parents realized that they should treat old people with respect and always show them respect, take a good care of them, and always ask their advice then stuck in a problem. In the second folk tale “The Wise Old Woman”, the old woman makes the young lord realize that old people are much more experienced and wiser than the young people by solving all three challenges that seem impossible to young men in the village.
