Prior to the idea of people being “citizens” of a nation, people were subjects, with no rights and forced to serve under the iron fist of their ruler. The idea of people having rights and responsibilities to their country originated in Athens, Greece circa 500 B.C. (Background Essay). Rome, however, far surpassed the Greeks in their social contract theory of citizenship (Background Essay) for the following reasons: 1) More people were considered citizens i.e. females and sons of freed slaves; 2)
Comparing Athens and Rome could also be thought of as comparing a flea, and an elephant. They have many differences, but are also surprisingly similar. So, who had the better system? The Roman Republic had a more established government, because citizenship was based on behavior, people had more liberties and freedoms, and Rome had a more secure government. Rome had a more established system of government because, their citizenship was based on how someone acts around and towards others, and their property.
Athens vs. Sparta Whether it's government, education, art, or military, Athens and Sparta have always had many similarities as well as differences in ancient Greece. Sparta and Athens did not share the same view and opinions. As a result of these disagreements, the two ancient Greek city-states were rivals. They both had very different methods of teaching, military training, women's rights, and more. Spartans focused most on the training of war, and Athens focused most on knowledge and intelligence.
Rome had the better outlook by far focusing mostly on family like it says in the paragraph “ A Roman citizen was judged more by how he behaved with his family, his neighbors, and his property”. This overall created a better environment with happier more helpful people which was better. Rome did have some of the Athenian rules just not the harsh ones the more diplomatic ones that were good for the system, because each system really does need some rules at least. Rome treated their citizens better too it seemed especially since it was a place where they showed citizenship through better treatment to each other. As many new immigrants come to America the process of Naturalization becomes more and more relevant. On average about 1,000,000 immigrants come to America per year and have a chance to become citizens through this process. This is quite similar but also very different than how it was in ancient Rome but Rome had a better system than how it was in Athens. Before learning the some of the good things about their system let’s dig into the basics. Rome was a city-state located on the Italian Peninsula in the middle of the mediterranean and was considered the center of trade.
One of the major differences has to do with the economies of these empires. Classical Rome had agriculture, but they relied heavily on international trade which they established early on. Classical Rome mostly traded with Africa, India, and China. This is very different from the Native American economy which relied very heavily on agriculture and trade between tribes only. If Native American empires had traded it was only between tribes.
Although the two city-states of Greece carried different motives they were both thought of as thinkers who loved beauty and multiple forms of art. Culture is one thing the two city states seemed to differ in greatly. Athens was thought to be a more progressive city-state. It’s known for art, architecture, drama, science advancements, philosophy, as well as literature. Though they were advanced in all of these fields they were behind on the rights of women.
3. Compare and contrast the idea of democracy in Ancient Greece and Rome. Which system was more democratic and why? Democracy is the modern day standard for governmental systems. However up until 500 BCE, the concept of Democracy was a foreign concept, and the great civilizations of that era were run by monarchs, aristocrats, and religious leaders of sorts.
Both civilizations had specific military strategies, weapons, and tactics that they used to protect themselves from enemies. While both militaries had some similarities, there were also some differences. The Ancient Greeks had a big military to protect them from outside enemies. They used a variety of weapons to protect themselves.

Impacts of Ancient Rome and Ancient Greece on America Most of America considers itself a “Great” nation. Whether this means powerful, intelligent, flourishing, thriving, et cetera, is unclear. In order to explore where America obtained the inspiration for its greatness, I am going to walk through the influence of the great Greek and Roman cultures and Empires (so to speak). These ancient civilizations were among the first that had governments of democracy and sophistication, of elections and thriving economies on a mass scale.
Ancient Rome left tremendous legacies such as technological advancements, religious beliefs and governmental structures that shaped the world today. The Romans conquered many territories and took on their cultures as well, in particular the Ancient Greek culture. Ancient Greek civilizations played a major role in the history and development of the Ancient Rome civilization. The Ancient Greeks influenced the social structure, religion and military strength of Ancient Rome.
Romans believed in equal voting, and equal access to the government for all, which is also shown in our Democratic Government. Another way Greeks and Romans still influence out modern civilization is through art. Greek art strongly influenced Rome’s art. Greek art continues to play a key role in Literature and Art classes in our modern civilization. Greeks has highly developed literacy, which included drama, poetry, and music.
All cities were close to water bodies while Rome was an inland nation and arranged on the banks of River Tiber. Talking about art of Greece and Rome, Greeks were thought to be better than that of Romans. One of the sculptures that Greece is known with is Venus de Milo. Romans were great at mosaic, wall painting and they were also known for creating realistic portraits.
