The novel, 1984, is a dystopian story of corruption and describes the dangers of a totalitarian government. The story highlights Julia and Winston’s journey to bring down the party and Big Brother. It is clear that the novel, published just four years after World War II ended, was designed to inflict fear. Orwell’s vision of the tyrannical style of government demonstrated in 1984, serves to enforce the notion that power and manipulation are treacherous. Throughout the novel, Orwell uses unique diction, and sense of fear in order to appeal to pathos and logos and represent his idea of an authoritarian society.
In 1949, an author by the name of George Orwell decided to put the tragedies that were happening in real life onto paper to create a frightening story that would haunt several generations. In the thrilling dystopian novel 1984, tells of a story of a new world that is filled with manipulation, fear, control, and a brainwashed public. This world depicts a government who is everywhere, sees everything, and controls every aspect of every person's life. Not only is the government controlling the public, but they are also in the media. Mainly the news being the source of manipulation, many stories get rewritten and several words get cut out of the news every day.
George Orwell, the author of 1984, writes the book to warn his readers about the possible future of a tyrannical government. The Party manipulates its citizens through psychological methods to gain power. By restricting the words of its citizens,
Orwell's sureness and strength in his article acts as evidence of weapons and their effects, because it helps confirm his claim as something that will for sure happen. This allows the audience to trust Orwell's claim, and his good development creates a very substantial article. Orwell also uses ethos by connecting himself with society by using informal language stating, "We were once told". Orwell is affirming that he and his audience were manipulated by the state. He is putting himself on the audience’s level, which makes the audience feel like they can relate to him.
Since its inception, the government's control over technology has made civilians fearful of their own rights and access to important information. These worries are explored in Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, when all the government wants is peace, hiding from the public makes it easier for the people to comprehend and for the government to thrive. Revealed when Montag wants to understand what makes him an outcast, which eventually causes him to struggle to be himself around those who are brainwashed and unconscious of the harm the government they trust is causing. As we witness new beliefs emerge in the government's system on a daily basis, we tend to believe what they bring to us is the "truth". This is reinforced when Captain Beatty explains
(Orwell 3-4). In 1984, telescreens are everywhere, they speak, record, and scan all areas within its reach. These are designed to spy on people, never allowing anyone to ever be alone, lessening the number of people that will rebel against Big Brother. Society is constantly around technology (not much of a choice), people are thought police that will see that you are guilty of committing a thought crime (thinking any bad thought against Big Brother). In this novel, thoughts are not private anymore.

We as society should not be letting ourselves be control by the government because it will get us into a much bigger danger of depending on their government. People should not be letting their lives be manipulated there is actually managment going on in them, people have the right to make their own choices or decisions because we all have rights and the government is not really respecting that. The people willingly obey and follow all their orders without knowing what they are actually doing. Many of these individual’s jobs, like Winston’s, are to hide and change facts to allow people to have faith in the Party. Many “books… were recalled and rewritten again and again, and were invariably reissued without any admission that any alteration had been made” to hide information from the people. The protagonist, Winston, figures out the real problem with this system and realizes the Party has tricked their citizens. Orwell exhibits the citizen’s oblivious attitude toward everything shown to them and their growing faith for the party allows them to follow the party’s orders.
The idea of the world represented in the novel, is exactly the world that Orwell did not wish the future to be. However in terms of the control mechanisms that have occurred due to the rule of a single party, Orwell’s best attempt to create awareness for this imperfect future was to create one where the privacy and freedom of humans is placed in jeopardy and in actual fact non-existent. Newspeak probably is the key component, while it does not immediately silence the idea of rebellion and freedom, it does narrow the thoughts of society into a single minded one. Some may call it hypnosis; others call it conforming to a normal.
By looking deeper into the novel and analyzing specific details Orwell included it can be seen how Orwell used the setting of the story, the city itself as well as the workplace of Winston as a few examples, and also the characters themselves, such as the Parsons, to get readers to see the message he was trying to warn of. The idea of conformity was enforced throughout the story, as shown above, in the ways that all citizens are made to essentially be the same as all others around them, with deadly consequences if they refuse. The theme of dehumanization is also deeply explored as all personal feelings and emotions are outlawed by the Party in an attempt to create people who all are the same. As well the setting is used to present the theme of the dangers of totalitarianism as Winston’s job is to change and “fix” any document that is critical in anyway of the government or expresses free speech. The thoughts and ideas of individuals are controlled; the lives of people are controlled. A sense of fear is ignited in the hearts of people. This was the condition of mankind during the world wars. And this scenario was used by Orwell in his works. It worked as a tool to awaken mankind so that they take actions against the forces that try to manipulate their thoughts.
