My first two books I digested was “Animal Farm” and “Revenge of the Whale”. The two books focused on the theme of leadership in times of trouble. We see this with Captain Pollard encouraging his men to keep fighting despite the mediocre chance of survival and Old Major stirring up his fellow comrades to rise against the oppression they are facing from the humans. Also, my dessert, “Percy Jackson” has a connection with “Revenge of the Whale”. Both narratives are focused on a group facing unprecedented danger on a quest. “Animal Farm” portrays the Russian Revolution as a farm taken over by animals lead by the pigs. I enjoyed this book because of how Orwell related characters in the book to people or groups in the Russian Revolution and how precisely he depicted the tyranny in the revolution. The book is based on the real life account of fourteen year-old Thomas Nickerson and his experiences as a sailor on the whale hunting ship Essex and their eventual downfall when they are left without the Essex after a whale attack. I enjoyed this book for its fast-paced action and extremely detailed story telling of the effects of starvation and dehydration to the minds and bodies of the sailors. Even witnessing the mens choices in to either resort to cannibalism or to die with dignity. I would recommend this book to people who can stomach the ghastly details of the sailors’ survival and people interested in survival stories and historical books. However, I enjoyed the book there were some parts that were certainly disappointing. Whenever the men ran out of food on the whaleboats they would always choose to eat the black sailor. I don’t understand that in times of desperate survival that race would still matter in who had a chance to make it home. Philbrick wrote this book to tell the unknown tale of the whaleship Essex and to highlight the theme that man can’t control nature but nature controls
