Compare and Contrast Essay There is a great deal of things you can differentiate from the Diary of Anne Frank by Anne Frank and Farewell to Manzanar by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston and James D. Houston. These two books are similar because they take place in the same time frame, but different regions when the world was undergoing World War II. These two books document the story of two families that was affected by this time. The Diary of Anne Frank is about how she and her friends and family lived throughout World War II.
In contrast to the Wakatsuki’s, the Frank family was put in a life or death situation. They were targeted by the German Nazi Party in which discriminated all Jews. Unlike Jeanne Wakatsuki, Anne’s family had a smaller area to work with and could not step foot out of the door. She attempts to put the situation in her own words. As stated in The Diary of a Young Girl, “I see the eight of us in the Annex as if we were a patch of blue sky surrounded by menacing black clouds.

Also on page 22 of the book Anne Frank Remembered by Miep Gies,¨I had a deep longing for an understanding of life.¨ Anne and Miep both had a strong longing to understand the meaning of life. This made their connection even stronger which resulted in them getting along very well. Miep was one of the only people that Anne could get along with during their time in the Annex. The 1940s were a crucial time all over the world with hardships and wars going on for years. Within these wars, two little girls that have been apart of it their whole lives, have shared their experiences through a diary and a book of stories. The Diary of Anne Frank is about a young jewish girl named Anne Frank, who has to go into hiding with her family in order to not get caught and taken away by the Nazis in Amsterdam, and while in hiding, records her experiences and thoughts into her diary. Farewell to Manzanar is a book based on a girl named Jeanne Wakatsuki who is seven years old at the time, and gets taken away with her family to Manzanar encampments, as the U.S. government doesn’t want to risk any Japanese Americans possibly giving up information to the Japanese as they are at war with them. Anne Frank and Jeanne Wakatsuki have many similarities and differences throughout their lifetimes on the run from the war.
