August Pullman, (also known as Auggie) from the story “Wonder,” by R.J. Palacio, has trouble being a fifth grader because he has a face deformity making him look like a monster. Also, a girl named Quarta from the story, “The Girl who was Born with only Two Arms and Two Legs,” by Stuart Baum, has similar problems at school because she also is deformed by only having two arms and two legs. Auggie and Quarta are very similar in how they deal with school while facing a disability. Also, eating is very embarrassing for both of them. Auggie’s mouth is shaped differently than other kids and he has to chew his food in a weird way. He says, “I hate the way I eat. I know how weird it looks...Like some prehistoric swamp thing.” Also, Quarta said in the story “... there were some lunches where her teachers had to give her food, like a baby, and this was embarrassing.” Another thing Auggie and Quarta have in common is that they don’t have many friends. Auggie is lucky that he has a few, Summer and Jack Will, but in “The Girl who was Born…” It says, “Growing up, Quarta had very few friends.” The similarities just never end!
