Call of the wild starts with a dog named Buck. To build a Fire starts with a man and a dog. The plethora of similarities between the two stories is impeccable. The stories both visualize important aspects of the bond between man and dog. Buck and the Husky both show the importance of loyalty to their companion. The stories both explain and symbolize aspects of the companionship and love between both the man and dog. The story of Buck starts off with a household who does not accept Buck. They dislike Buck because of his size and the enormous amount of noises that Buck makes for being such a colossal dog. The main difference between the story is that Call of the Wild focuses mainly on Buck while To Build a Fire focuses on the man. Furthermore the overarching theme in To Build a Fire compares humans versus humans, or man vs self. The focus of Call of the Wild is dog versus man, which compares to how Buck was mistreated from the start. Call of the Wild also focuses on a group of dogs, later Buck triumphs over the leader of the pack and becomes the new leader, proving his strength.
Symbolism occurs when symbols are used to convey a message. Loyalty is a main symbolic theme in the story. The bond between dog and man in the story. A major theme in Call of the Wild is that Buck is a servant, sticks and harnesses indicate that Buck is not the leader and does not make all the decisions. In order to build a fire the fire symbolizes the fact it is cold and the man needs heat to survive. It shows the freezing cold is not something you want to travel in. The man running symbolizes his need to get help from the cold.
