In the book “To Kill a Mockingbird,” there was a lot of courage. Courage means the ability to do something that frightens one. It takes a brave person to show courage. In the book a lot of the characters showed courage in their own way. More into the book, you’ll see more courage from the characters.
In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Scout, Calpurnia, and Atticus stand out when courage comes to mind. These characters show courage in many unique ways with different situations. In the early 1930s, in the deep south, racial discrimination was a huge conflict, for example, the Jim Crows Laws were in play, and it legalized segregation between blacks and whites. Courage isn’t always shown in situations, but simply throughout growing up.
In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee vividly illustrates the real meaning of courage, both physical and emotional, through various situations and characters. Jem and Scout mix up courage and strength. They think courage is the ability to use strength to get your way. But c courage in the novel is not about winning or losing. It’s about doing what’s right even when it may be hard and people may not be on your side.
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and “Courage” by Edgar A Guest show similar and different aspects of courage with tone and theme. First, Lee develops a tense tone when Atticus protects Tom Robinson from the angry mob at the Maycomb County Jail, he is the only one who is courageous enough to step up to the mob. When she writes, “He put the newspaper down carefully, adjusting its creases with lingering fingers”(Lee 91). Atticus is put into a tense situation because he is getting confronted by a lynch mob.atticus was courageous enough to step up to lynch mob. Guest’s “Courage” demonstrates an optimistic tone when he describes courage to be time-consuming.
“[Courage is] when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what” (Lee 112). When courage is mentioned, one may think of “a man with a gun in his hand” (112). This is a myth that Harper Lee debunks in her book To Kill A Mockingbird. Courage is a recurring and vital theme in her book because many of the characters show the other townspeople what courage looks like.
In chapter 11 of To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and Courage by Edgar Albert Guest have numerous similarities. The points of similarities diction and theme were created for several reasons. Similarities between the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird and the text Courage are illustrated through negative tone by diction. The novel states, “She was vicious. Once she heard Jem refer to our father as Atticus and her reaction was apoplectic”(Harper Lee 133).
Courage in To Kill a Mockingbird When the word courage is thrown into a conversation, most think about the courageous hero in tall tales saving towns, countries, or the world. Never, do people think of an inner courage within themselves or between one other person. This novel circles around a young girl named Scout, and her close friends and family. Scout's father, Atticus, is a lawyer defending an African American man, which seems to be socially unacceptable in this time period.

You are not born with courage, it 's something that’s created over time. Being courageous is never a lucid decision, it determines the quality of a person 's mind as it 's faced with difficulty, danger, pain, and a test of bravery. The book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee develops the theme concerning courage to show the difficulty and the necessity of acting boldly. The characters Atticus, Scout, Arthur Radley and Mrs.Dubose display an act of courage as they are faced with feasible but difficult situations.
Courage is strength in the face of physical pain, hardship or death. It is also the choice and willingness to confront shame and personal loss. In Harper Lee's novel 'To Kill a Mockingbird', people demonstrate courage by standing up against prejudice, and overcoming their own loneliness and fears to live a good life. Mrs Dubose faces up to her morphine addiction. Atticus faces down the racism of the town.
These are just a few of the instances where courage is evident in this novel. Before reading To Kill a Mockingbird I believed courage was the ability and willingness to use strength to get your way. However, Harper Lee’s words have changed my perspective on the idea of courage. Atticus defines courage as “…when you know you 're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what” (Lee 115).
Harper Lee wants to tell us that it takes courage NOT to kill a mockingbird Courage and the symbol of the mockingbird are two of the most important, or in fact in my opinion the most important themes, which are addressed and displayed in the highly praised, but also controversial novel “To Kill A Mockingbird” written by Harper Lee. I will try to interpret these two motives and show how they are strongly connected to each other. There are many different types of courage and many people who all show it in their own personal way. If people talk about bravery and courage, they mostly think of the physical kind of courage. But there are also other kinds, which are often forgotten or cast aside by their big brother: moral and emotional courage.
Carrie by Stephen King is not your typical teen novels about an outcast getting bullied. There is a twist in this novel. Carrie White, a senior at Ewen High School and was picked on since elementary school, has the power of telekinesis. She has the incredible ability to move and control objects or people with just her mind. Carrie’s mother, Margent white is an extremely religious Christian.
Do you see people having courage in their society? Harper Lee puts courage as a central idea of To Kill a Mockingbird just as courage is a central idea in The Giver and if you have read the book then you would know that Jonas uses his courage to change society. It is almost the same thing in To Kill a Mockingbird except Atticus is trying to stop racial segregation in the society. If you haven 't read To Kill a Mockingbird then you have to know it is a fictional story about a girl named Scout who grew up in the 1930’s when segregation was all over America. I believe that Harper Lee adds courage as a key component of the overall To Kill a Mockingbird story because courage can change a whole society as she proves in her book.
