In the modern movement, machine is considered as either literally or metaphorically, the most representative examples of it can be seen in the “omit the Unimportant”, by Dieter Rams, and “Eva Zeisel Recontexualized...Tomorrow’s Classic Today”, by Ezra shales. These two readings contain the opinions of the designers Dieter Rams and Eva Zeisel about what makes a good design, such as design for all and as little design as possible. Moreover, these features are in their works as well, for instance, Rams’ calculator and Eva Zeisel’s Bread and Butter plate. Both Rams and Zeisel, and Bauhaus, which is a school that was found by Walter Gropius, have different understandings toward the machine. One of the examples of Bauhaus designs, Mocha Machine, …show more content…
In addition, good design should be user friendly, such as easy to understand, and design based on what people need, instead of just the product itself, which caused lack of functionality. The opposite example of Rams’ principle of design is () Gropius, who runs Bauhaus, and develops a new thinking in design, for instance, he promotes the aesthetic of machine production, although there was no mass production at that time, he encourages Bauhaus students to hide the evidence of handcraft, and produce something that looks like it is been machine made. Moreover, in order to produce something that is more elegant, they chose heavy materials such as metal, to achieve the features that represent Modernism, such as "geometric forms, shiny surfaces, industrial materials, and precision" (Marcus, 3). For example, the Mocha Machine produced by Wilhelm Wagenfeld, in 1923, and considered as “the transition of the Bauhaus from the craft aesthetic to the machine aesthetic. Nevertheless, Bauhaus pursue more of the appearance of their products, and ignore the fact that the users might not like the product because it is not easy to use due to the heavy materials. Therefore, although Bauhaus have products with high quality looking and smooth …show more content…
Although these are just some small features, it gives a feeling to the users that the designer ¬cares about what the user need and then make improvements in functionality. As Jane Fulto Suri mentioned in her reading “The Experience of Evolution Developments in Design Practice”, “as designers, we are now challenged explicitly to help companies explore and visualize directions for their future offerings that evoke and support specific qualities of experience”(Suri, 2). She also states the process of how to create designs that is user-friendly, For example,“ First are developments relating to awareness of people's experience, a second development is in representing multiple dimensions of people's experience through modelling tools used to explore design ideas. Finally, both design teams and client groups involve professionals from multiple driplines and business function”. It reveals that the thing she mentioned the most here, which is based on people’s experience to design, in order to design something that is useful. Similarly, based on an article called “How Design for One Turns Into Design for All”, by
