The well known phrases ¨grease is the word¨, and ¨what team? Wildcats¨ emerged decades apart, yet from almost the same movie. With a twenty eight year age gap between the movies Grease and High School Musical, there were bound to be some differences in the way the characters handled their problems. The leading characters, also called protagonists, Sandra Dee with Danny Zuko and Gabriella Montez with Troy Bolton are influenced by their respective time periods and how women are . Set in the 1950’s; a period often viewed as one of conformity, Grease's, Sandra and Danny portrait traditional gender roles; she desperately craved his approval (evidence). A romance between the new girl and the most popular guy in school, the student body did not view this as acceptable. Unlike the ladies who were both in “a fish out of water situation” and had no social status to hold (Huntley, Monahan n.pag), both male protagonists had difficulties combining their social status with another. For Danny Zuko, it meant remaining the leader of a gang of greasers, the ¨T birds¨ while at the same time lettering in track. Troy Bolton, on the other hand, wanted to remain a “jock” as captain of the basketball team but be a member of the drama club as well. Danny succeeds in the end by explaining to the T-Birds that he cannot be their leader forever. It also helped that Sandy gave up her good girl image for a pair of leather pants, lots of make-up and a cigarette. The song “We Go Together” plays at the end of the movie while the audience sees the entire student body united at a carnival. Troy too succeeds in combining two worlds when his actions influence the students in the lunchroom to admit that they like other things, such as baking and dancing. The song ¨Stick to the Status Quo¨ plays and the audience sees a sort of montage of change. Troy acts as an example and influences the students to put their differences and stereotypes aside. ¨We’re All In This Together¨ plays and the movie ends with the basketball team, drama club, nerds, skaters, and cheerleaders coming together as one student body. Both movies show the trial and tribulations of high school students in different decades but in the end they reach the conclusion. Both of these movies may have had a happy ending, but that does not mean they reached that conclusion
