In the readings of Gregory VII and Henry IV letters, there is extreme tension between the two. The core area of contention is who has the authority to appoint high-level churchmen such as Bishops. The divide is wide and takes many years to close. Both men, as humans, wanted to believe that he had the most influence over the church. In his letters, Gregory VII argued that God through St. Peter the first Pope gave the Pope the authority to appoint churchmen.
