Hamlet was published in 1603 by William Shakespeare. The plot of Hamlet revolves around a prince of Denmark named Hamlet, trying to avenge the murder of his father done by the newly throned king and his uncle, King Claudius. The play also revolves around the controversy of King Claudius’ marriage to his late brothers wife Gertrude. The play begins with two guards, Marcellus and Bernardo, witnessing a ghost that resembles the attributes of the late King Hamlet, whose brother is now the newly throned king and newly wedded husband of the widow, Queen Gertrude. After witnessing this ghost, they turn to Horatio, a man who is a close, trustworthy and loyal friend to prince Hamlet. Hamlet immediately thinks of a way in which he can prove his uncle’s guilt. Imagining the process of which his father was murdered, he asks the actors to perform that exact scene in the play. If King Claudius reacts to this scene then it will be apparent to both Hamlet and Horatio of the guilt Claudius is carrying amongst himself. Arriving closer to the scene that depicts the murder, Claudius is seen to leave the play. When this occurs, Hamlet and Horatio both realize that their assumption of the king turned out to be correct. Hamlet then prepares to kill his uncle only to find him praying. Due to Hamlet’s tendency to overthink things, he doesn’t kill Claudius because he believes that if he does kill him, his spirit will go to heaven. Since he doesn’t want that to happen, he once again delays the death of his uncle. Claudius catching on to the reason of Hamlet’s madness orders him to be sent away. Hamlet proceeds to his mother and confront her on the sin she has committed. During this encounter, Hamlet hears a noise within his mother's room and draws his weapon and stabs the man, who happens to be none other than Polonius. Claudius, then, arranges for a duel between the two.. During this duel, the king has a cup that contains poisoned wine. When Hamlet strikes Laertes he offers it to Hamlet, who declines the king’s offer. Queen Gertrude takes the cup from the king and drinks it. This leads to her death. Laertes get struck by the sword that is poisoned, ultimately allowing him to reveal to Hamlet that this is all the doing of his uncle. Hamlet gets struck with it too. Moments before Hamlet’s death, he kills his uncle not only for the murder of his father but mother too and requests Horatio to tell his story. Laertes, Hamlet, King Claudius, and Queen Gertrude die.
