Various healthcare organizations have experienced drastic changes in the last couple of decades – from different approaches to providing medical care to new regulations around price transparency. However, one of the latest trends in healthcare is hospital merger and acquisition. There are many debates about whether consolidation in health care enhances efficiency, or is actually damaging quality.

Regardless, it all happens because medical facilities are in need of creating larger hospital systems, which could consequently have broader services offered and can better meet a patient’s continuum of care. Having different criteria, naming conventions, or priorities created makes it hard for medical centers to successfully complete the transfer of supplies after merging with one another. Naturally, every organization in any industry will do things slightly different, with different goals and expectation. Hospitals and supply chains are no different.

What’s acceptable for one hospital, doesn’t necessarily have to be for the other. Often, merging hospitals happen to have different product and capacity profiles, so establishing the same metrics system and coming to the same terms with financial, supply and delivery performance may be the key for the successful supply chain!
