Two critically acclaimed films Jiro’s Dreams of Sushi, directed by David Gelb, and The Gleaners and I, directed by Agnes Varda, are both outstanding documentaries. By using interviews and first hand looks, the directors do a superb job in showing why Jiro’s restaurant is the number one sushi restaurant in the world, and showing how the lower class in France are living. The documentary, Jiro’s Dreams of Sushi, directed by David Gelb explores Jiro Ono’s journey, he started off as an apprentice who would make just enough to feed his family, and became the owner of the most prolific sushi restaurant in the world. We find out many unorthodox things in this restaurant, it only seats 10 and it is under a subway station, yet they received a 3 star rating on the michelin guide and customers have to make a reservation a month in advance to eat there. …show more content…
We see the amount of work that is put into each piece of fish, how long it is marinated for, or how long it’s flavored for, or even how thickly the fish is cut. In one scene we see that one of the apprentices is asked to massage an octopus for an excruciatingly long time, to give it the best flavor.
