In the “Rules of the Games” or “Two Kinds” from the Joy Luck Club and Bissinger’s “Dreaming Of Heroes” from Friday Night Lights, the common theme of hope and confidence took place with Mike and Jing Mei being under the condition of pressure and their parents high expectations. Both of their parents has high expectations for their children because they wanted them to have a better life than they did. What Mike and Jing Mei failed to realize was that everything their parents provided them with was for the better of them. Pressure from being in the process to reach their parents expectations caused them to want to give up. In the novel Friday Night Lights, Mike’s brother, Joe told him what hopes his father had for him. “You were the most special thing in his life, you’re gonna have to make him proud of you,” Joe was simply telling Mike that his father has high hopes for him to be able to make him happy in the correct decisions that he makes.
