“Witches Brew” by David Casper In Act IV, the three witches played a major role in providing important prophecies concerning Macbeth. The song “Witches Brew” illustrates the wickedness of the Weird Sisters. When creating their potion, the witches add ingredients, such as an “eye of newt” and a “toe of frog” (Shakespeare 4.1.14), that are often associated with evil and nasty creatures. The Weird Sisters use this concoction to reveal Macbeth’s apparitions, a dark premonition depicting his downfall.
Shortly before her husband enters the room, Lady Macbeth calls upon the darkness to aid Macbeth in his plan to kill Duncan. Lady Macbeth states, "Come, thick night, and pall thee in the dunnest smoke of hell, that my keen knife see not the wound it makes, nor heaven peep through the blanket of the dark to cry, 'Hold, hold!" (Iv 57-60). Again the theme of darkness is used by Shakespeare to set the stage for the evil act about to be committed by Macbeth, which leads to the disruption of natural harmony in Scotland and to damn Macbeth's
Now that the important murders have been committed by Macbeth, the word night starts to take a different in its usage and meaning. Though it maintains its meaning as to signify impending doom and negativity, the target of that doom and badness is now directed at Macbeth. Starting with Scene 1, the witches cast a spell in their cauldron to create apparitions that would deceive Macbeth. Though the usage of night in each separate quote has nothing of importance, in big picture, it is part of a spell to bring Macbeth down.
Whereas in the text of Macbeth, the setting is first presented as evil, stated by Macbeth “no foul and fair a day I have not seen“. On the contrary Macbeth is presented as ‘brave’ and ‘courageous’, ‘the savior of the day’, this implies that the writers chose the great difference in setting and character for the reader to
Like a candle within the darkness, the imagery of light in dark comes up plenty in Romeo and Juliet. Variations on this imagery are continual again and again—images of Juliet as a sun rising within the darkness, of Juliet's eyes shining in the sky, pictures of Romeo's body cut out in little stars, of Romeo and Juliet's love as a bright flash. At times, the scene of a flash of light disappearing into the twilight appears to symbolize each the sensible strength of Romeo and Juliet's love, in addition as its transience. The imagery of light and darkness additionally picks up the play's stress on the contrasts between love and hate, passion and death. Night is a pretty vital time within the play.
In William Shakespeare’s play The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet the motif light vs. dark illustrates the dreadful consequences that love can have on two teenagers. Mr. Shakespeare uses light vs. dark as imagery to display how two star-crossed lovers feel towards each other. The play The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet is a love story about two teenage lovers who take their lives as a result of not being able to be together. Romeo and Juliet had a secret marriage because they wanted to be together but couldn’t be because their families hated each other.
“Ha, good father, Thou seest, the heavens, as troubled with man's act, threaten his bloody stage. By th' clock, 'tis day, and yet dark night strangles the traveling lamp. Is't night's predominance or the day's shame that darkness does the face of earth entomb when living light should kiss it?” To which an old man replied, “‘Tis unnatural, even like the deed that's done.” It is said that to kill your liege lord is the second most unnatural crime during the dark ages, the first being fratricide, the killing of one’s family.
Making a movie from direct content that is more than a hundred years old is easy because all the scenes and script is there for your use. Some directors like to make some drastic or minor changes based on their own interpretation of the play Macbeth by William Shakespeare. While watching both Goold (2010) and Polanski (1971), I have noticed a lot of major differences between the two movies and the original play Macbeth written by William Shakespeare. Some of the differences I have noticed is that is in Goold (2010), Macbeth actually comes to kill Lady Macduff and her children. Another difference in Goold (2010) is that the witches are shown throughout the film.
In films and literature, darkness often represents fear and misery, whereas light portrays joy and cheerfulness. Shakespeare undoubtedly utilizes these connotations in his tragedy Romeo and Juliet, as light imagery is used in order to establish joyous atmospheres and display the elation of being in love, whereas dark imagery is used to create tension and portray the distress that love can inflict. Thus, through Shakespeare’s use of light and dark imagery in Romeo and Juliet, it is undeniable that he effectively creates atmosphere and reinforces the theme of love as a source of joy and pain. Firstly, light imagery is used in pursuance of establishing a romantic atmosphere, whereas dark imagery is employed in order to generate suspense.
The reader is able to see this through Macbeth’s contemplation on whether or not he should kill Duncan, Lady Macbeth's lust for power and Macbeth’s final yet selfish decision. The overall comparisons are able to demonstrate the harmful physical and psychological effects of power throughout a community. As a result, the reader can learn from both Queen and Shakespeare that one's evil pleasure and desires can be a result of one's destruction all
Throughout the celebrated tragic play of Romeo and Juliet, readers can see many different forms of symbolism being used to explore the feelings of love, fate, and revenge. These examples of symbolism are used to deepen and reinforce the readers’ understanding of the play. One symbol Shakespeare used was the contrast of light and darkness. He used this symbolism to portray the light as innocent gentle characters like Romeo, Juliet, Mercutio. He used the darkness to show those who exhibit evil or violence such as Lord Capulet and Paris, who usually only showed up at night.
Light symbolizes purity and love while darkness gives off the impression of fear, hate, and violence. In Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”, the playwright flips the symbolism, blurring the line between what is good and bad. This gives off the message that not all things appear as they are first perceived. The play’s main characters, Romeo and Juliet, discover that love can be soothing but can also be rough. Hate is malicious, but it can also lead to righteousness.
One of the biggest representations of this is the sky going dark. “By the clock ‘tis day, / And yet dark night strangles the traveling lamp,” (2.4.6-7). Darkness is often associated with wrongdoing, and the dark sky in the middle of the day is the world rejecting the abnormality of Macbeth murdering the King. Two of Duncan’s horses - trained to be obedient and gentle at all times - broke out of their stalls despite their usual calm and ate each other. This unbalance in nature affects not only the physical world of birds and horses, but also disturbances in Macbeth’s very human nature.
For instance, some characters who are considered to be righteous are associated with light. For instance, Malcolm, Duncan and Macduff are portrayed as righteous, and their deeds are performed in light or during the day. The imagery on darkness is associated with the characters that are deemed as evil including Macbeth, Lady Macbeth and the witches. Shakespeare chooses to use this light and darkness imagery to indicate the degree of goodness and badness of the characters. This study, therefore, shows more instances of imagery of light and darkness as used in the poem.
In Shakespeare’s Macbeth lightness and darkness are used to create the key ideas throughout the play of good and evil. Unnatural events in nature were accompanied by darkness often following evil deeds, where light has been overcome, shown through a metaphor and symbolism. Night is used as a motif, with characters frequently calling upon it to assist them in their crimes. Symbolism of light and darkness are used to show how Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are consumed by guilt which leads to their eventual downfall, and goods return to power. Shakespeare successfully compares ideas of light and dark to convey important themes.
