Comparison of Medical Education in China and United States Medical schools Zhang, Lee, Gruppen, and Ba (2013) found as of January 2012, there are 630 medical schools in China, including 350 secondary medical–pharmaceutical schools, which provide a 3-year medical education curriculum and 280 medical–pharmaceutical universities, which provide medical education programs varying from 5 to 8 years. Students will attend SAT after they finish High School and admitted by different universities or colleges according to their SAT scores and other factors. Before applying medical school, they will need to complete a 4-year bachelor’s degree. Medical schools consider different factors to decide whom to accept for admission. Medical College Admission Test is one of the important factors. The exam tests biology, verbal reasoning, physical and writing. Medical universities will also weigh other admission factors such as GPA, personal statement, letters of recommendation, volunteer experiences and interview. Undergraduate medical education According to Zhang et al: “ after 2012 ‘‘Opinions on Medical Education Reform’’ and ‘‘Opinions on implementing excellent physician education program,’’ the Ministry of Education standardized medical education training programs to three types, 3-year, 5-year and 8-year programs” (2013). Graduate of a 3-year program can receive an assistant general practitioner license after finishing 2-year general practice training. Graduates of 8-year programs can wait until their graduate year if they have one year clinical training similar to residency training. According to data from The National Medical Examination Center 2013: “ in 2011, the pass level for clinical knowledge was 356/600 and for clinical skills, 60/100. About 30% of examinees pass the exam.” In United States, medical school typically lasts for 4 years. Students will spend the first 2 years studying in classroom. In classroom students will learn about cardiovascular, pulmonary, and neurological systems. Medical schools are usually connected with teaching hospitals. Students will study in a teaching hospital and apply their knowledge from textbook to practices. (Thompson, 2014) In the teaching hospital, students will learn about different specialties and decide what kind of physician they want to be during the last year of medical school. Students graduate from medical school will earn a doctor of medicine degree or a doctor of osteopathy degree. After graduation, physicians complete a residency in a teaching hospital that trains them in a particular medical specialty. “First-year residents are called inter. Residency can last from 3 to 7 years depending on the specialty”
