" This ordeal started out with two teenage kids, Michelle Carter and Conrad Roy III. Both teens struggled with many different illnesses; Michelle was treated for anorexia and Conrad for earlier suicide attempts. Nonetheless, they found a way to cope together. In 2014, Conrad Roy III took his own life by filling up his truck with carbon monoxide. Reports were made that Conrad had doubts about committing suicide and crawled out of the truck. Michelle, however, urged her boyfriend to “get back in” in a text message from her phone. This was not the first time Michelle had encouraged Conrad to kill himself. Initially reported was Michelle’s behavior towards his suicide. Michelle told Conrad to “get back in”, when he tried to save his own life by crawling out of the carbon monoxide filled truck. Michelle did not utilize the simple instruction for Conrad to get out of the car. Michelle continuously urged Conrad to “not back down”. The day Conrad killed himself, Michelle texted him this message, “The time is right and you are ready ... just do it babe.” “You can’t think about it. You just have to do it. You said you were gonna do it. Like I don’t get why you aren’t,” Michelle wrote in another text. Dozens of texts like these were sent to Conrad. The judge expressed that Michelle’s texts were “wanton and reckless conduct” under the manslaughter statute.
