The author argues that Microsoft held a monopoly over the PC market just like Standard Oil did, but in this case, the government never broke up Microsoft monopoly. Back in 1911, Standard Oil maintained control almost the entire oil refinery business in the US. What made Standard Oil a monopoly was not only did it refine all the oil, but it controlled the fracking, refining and even transportation of the product. Due to the nature of a monopoly, they were fully capable of raising prices, which they did to other consumers. Due to their power they were able to run the market and gauge prices for years. This compares to Microsoft because they have very similar structure as Standard Oil did back in the day. Microsoft created a Operating System(OS)
