Although many people see war being broadcasted, it is not just on the battle fields where it is being fought. Wars can occur in remote and isolated locations; it can also occur out on the field. For many prisoners of war (POWs), like Louie Zamperini, the hero from Laura Hillenbrand's Unbroken, the long term effects on the brain are detrimental. Many people during WWII were imprisoned, beated, and made to feel “invisible.” Even though POWs go through a lot, there are still battles being fought that aren’t seen. Mine Okubo - a nisei - was born in California and was an American citizen by birth, but forcibly removed from her life and put in a Japanese American internment camp by the United States Government. However, they both resisted the pressure and resisted the acts of the higher ups. While in the internment camps, Okubo got an amazing opportunity to go to New York for her art skills: however, Okubo was stuck in an interment camp. Okubo applied for a loyalty test which Okubo passed. Okubo resisted the forces of the United States government by proving her loyalty and going on to have an amazing art carrer, some of her art peices captured what the internment camps were really like. On the other hand, Louie Zamperini fought many relentless battles against the guards, especially against the bird. Louie says, “He cannot break me” (Hillenbrand 113). By saying this Louie resisted the attempts of the Bird trying to make him feel invisible. Even thought Louie was already resisting the Bird, Louie and the other POWs resisted even more, “...They threw dirt in gas tanks” (Hillenbrand 179) Louie and the other POWs did this because they were being treated like slaves in the coal mine. Although not as harsh as what the POWs went through, the POWs threw dirt into the gas tank so that the Japanese could learn not to mess with the POWs because they will fight back.
