Every relationship needs communication and trust in order to keep going in a peaceful manner, every magazine and every TV show tells us that. But what happens when we are talking about a different kind of relation? One that involves powerful partners and in which everybody wants to dominate.What happens when this “relationship” involves partners with trust problems? How do we solve them? How do we keep things going? The relation I am talking about is the one between the Eastern Bloc (the USSR and its allies) and the Western Bloc (the US and its allies) after the end of The Second World War in 1945. The end of the war, unfortunately, did not bring with itself peace and harmony or new hopes for a better future, as one cruel and bloody war ended, another would start as a result of the constantly growing tensions between the Soviets and the Americans. In 1949, USSR exploded an atomic bomb and this aggravated their trust problems. Why? Because both of them were in possession of the most powerful and destructive weapon and both of them were willing to use it in case they felt threatened. (Nicholson, 2002) During the Cold War, it was developed a doctrine called nuclear deterrence, but this doctrine still applies to present contexts which involve nuclear weapons.
