Comparison of Two Presidents
The President of the United States is the head of state and head of government of the United States. As a matter of fact, the president directs the executive branch of the federal government and is the commander-in-chief of the United States Armed Forces. He is indirectly elected by the people through the Electoral College to a four-year term, and is one of only two nationally elected federal officers, the other being the Vice President of the United States. His father was a service station owner and grocer and his mother was a Quaker who exerted a strong influence on her son. Even though Nixon’s early life was hard, he attended Fullerton High School but later transferred to Whittier High School and graduated second in his class; as a result, he was offered a scholarship to Harvard. Unfortunately, Nixon’s family could not afford the travel and living expenses, thus, he attended local Whittier College. He received a full scholarship to Duke University Law School in Durham, N.C. Eventually, Nixon participated actively in this country politics and became member of the US. House of Representatives from 1947 to 1951, as well as an US Senator from 1951 to 1953. Subsequently, he launched his bid for the presidency in early 1960 against the democratic Massachusetts Senator John F. Kennedy, but in November 1960, Richard Nixon narrowly lost the presidential election, by only 120,000 votes. One side, the economic background, Nixon came from a poor family and had a tough life, while Kennedy’s family was wealthy and prominent. On the other hand, they came from two completely opposite party affiliation, Nixon was Republican while Kennedy was Democrat. However, both were very similar in many ways. Both of them had an earlier position in Government, as member of House of Representatives and the US Senate, which took them both to reach the Presidency of the USA.
