Comparison Of Vanya And Masha And Spike

Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, written by Christopher Durang, is a play about the relationships between three siblings. I watched the comedy on October 22, 2015 at the Pierce College Arts Building. The play was directed by Shaheen Vaaz, who did a great job setting the play as she intended it to be. Everything from the design set, the emotions from the actors, to the typecasting was excellently produced. Particularly, the actor were able to greatly express thier characters’ emotions throughout the play. The setting only takes place in Vanya and Sonia’s living room. The play included the familiarity of Durang’s, but now with an integrated modernized influence. My experience watching Vaaz’s take of Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike was humorous, entertaining, and enjoyable.

Vanya and Sonia, whom live in the house, spend their days together arguing over coffee and watching birds in the morning. Thier sister, Masha, is an accomplished movie star that has almost no concern for her unemployed siblings. Masha pays for all of Vanya and Sonia’s expenses, while her siblings complain about their own misfortunes. Vanya’s character is a lonely and depressed man living his days with an pessimistic mindset. His adopted sister, Sonia, constantly conveys her gloominess with jealous comparisons to her famous and wealthy. In contrast, Masha’s egocentric personality is showed throughout the entire play, as she flaunts telling stories about her glamorous lifestyle.
