In the 19th and 20th century, a time when the black community was being afforded a free status, but not one of equality, Booker T. Washington an W.E.B DuBois stood as two great leaders for change. Although, these two men were both in search of race equality, they sharply disagreed on the strategies of progress for the African American society. Booker T. Washington, preached a philosophy of self-help. Washington argued for racial solidarity where the pursuit of prosperity forwent disputing segregation and jim crow. Washington pushed blacks to cultivate strong moral virtues through concentrating of elevating themselves through hard work.
