A comparison of feminism in Angela Carter’s The Company of wolves and Emma Donoghue’s The Tale of the Shoe. Feminism deals with problem associated with gender inequality and rights of women. The term was first originated from the French word “feminisme,” coined by the utopian socialist Charles Fourier, and it was initially used in English in the 1890s, in relation with the movement for equal political and legal rights for women ( New World Encyclopedia, 2013). The history of feminism is said to be divided into three waves such first, second and third waves (Stacy, 2014). The story The Tale of the Shoe where Cinderella, she is the dominant to the myth of sexuality, love and happiness (Sengupta, n.d). It also shows the urge of similar sexual attraction. The Tale of the Story shows the development of lesbian genre fiction(Sengupta, n.d). In her reworking of Cinderella, Donoghue does not attempt to define the sexual orientations of Cinderella or the stranger (the Fairy Godmother), and encourages the reader not to do so, either. The misunderstanding concept had led the readers to make embark on a romantic relationship and at the end it was made clear, but there is no moment of scandalous, shocking realization. The sexuality of the two women is portrayed as entirely natural; it is not stressed or emphasized, for there is no reason for shock or surprise. Sexual identity is, after all, a social construct that can be overturned if and whenever society chooses to do so. The feminism in this story The Tale of the Shoe is that women are still seen as a primarily as creatures of the home, their natural habitat being that of the domestic sphere, and their natural role being that of the mother such the role played by Cinderella as a maid and her Fairy Godmother who looks after her. Donoghue had changed the plot where the girl realizes that man is not all the time to fulfill with her needs. So, instead of falling for the prince she wants more of her Godmother.
