Ice hockey was invented in the eighteenth century, and since then the sport has only grown and gotten more popular over the years. Hockey is very different from a lot of other sports, because it is played on ice. In addition, players have to wear metal blades that are razor sharp at the bottom of their skates and play at a high speed. Furthermore, because the sport is so different from anything else, it takes a certain breed of people to play it and live the lifestyle of a hockey player. Hockey players block shots, take hits, and fight for their teammates and with that type of play comes injuries. Players get injured, but unlike other sports, hockey players not only want to, but are expected to play injured by players and coaches because it is an unspoken code to play until you physically cannot anymore. Huber stated “I played a whole season on a broken foot because I could not let down my teammates and a little pain was worth it to win.” Players want to play at all costs, which includes playing injured like many players do during a season. Many different players suffer from injuries, but do not want to let down their team, so they ignore the pain and continue to play. It is in their personality to never give up and to keep going until you physically are not able to anymore. That is different from other sports because in other sports one injury is enough to stop a player from playing, but in hockey, players will play with several injuries because it is expected of them.
