The people in society all have varying attitudes and opinions towards the role and the purpose of institutions, therefore this affects people’s belief in the Institution in general and the power that people will have becomes varied (need to include actions). The attitudes and actions of these two texts, can be seen through the characters of; Sam and Brett from the novel “Raw” and the warden and Andy from the Movie “Shawshank redemption. Even though this may seem true in society, it is completely false. In some of the Institutions, their role is to help rehabilitate the inmates and help them to change their ways. One of the main characters that was considered to be ‘institutionalised’ was Brooks.. He didn’t want to leave the Institution. He was willing to commit a crime, to stay where he believed he belonged.( add how this experience has changed him as a person and he has lost all sense of himself as an individual) The was due to the simple fact that “In prison he was an educated man, outside he is nothing”. Some of the boss’s believe that their job is to only be there to enforce the rules, while others believe they are there to help rehabilitate the inmates. This can be viewed in the movie Shawshank redemption through the character of ‘The warden’. The warden is considered to be a man, where he believe that his job in the Institution is to control the people within the walls. He believes that the only use for the money he has is to be spent on “more wall, more guards and more bars”. While on the other hand, the character Sam from the novel ‘Raw’. His approach towards his role in the Institution is completely different. His main belief is that he is there to help rehabilitate the boys and to help them rejoin society. One of the ways he does this is by reinforcing education. This just shows us that the people with a positive attitude towards running an Institution, have a positive reflection towards the people inside the
