Competency 001 Reflection

In regards to the perception of importance, I did not respond to any of them with a 1 or 2. In fact, I responded with a 4 the majority of the time. Not only do I see the significance of these competencies based on State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC), but also through my experience on multiple campuses and their direct impact on the campus culture and student achievement. When these competencies are followed and care is given to ensure you have a happy and productive staff, student achievement rises. With the exception of Competence 008 – Budgeting, Resource Allocation, Financial Management, and Technology, all of them can be linked directly to the day-to-day operations and environment of a teacher. The unspoken attitude was, “they should be performing well so no need to celebrate it.” I responded with a 2 to “implementing strategies to ensure the development of collegial relationships and effective collaboration” and “establish procedures to assess and modify implementation plans to ensure achievement of campus vision.” Again, these may have been valuable to the administrator, but they were not successfully able to communicate that importance. Collaboration was the corner stone of education when I began my career in the mid-nineties. It seemed to go out of vogue from the late nineties until recently. It seemed to correspond to the No Child Left Behind implementation when leaders became focused on the school’s report
