“To be able to dance well, one needs to be flexible, strong, have stamina, have endurance and most importantly have a love for what they do.” Although dance is not considered competitive enough to be a sport, because of the dancers hard work, the many hours spent practicing and training, and what goes into preparing for important competitions, dance should be considered not only a sport, but a one of the most important and popular. High schools should adapt competitive dance into their athletic programs.
The ability of dance is something that not everyone has. Many dancers have to practice several hours a day to perfectionate their technique. It also takes a lot of flexibility. Dancing takes hours of practice and years of dedication to master, just like other recognized high school sports. Although some people say that the ability of dance is not unique, this is not true. “In order to qualify as a sport in the Olympics it must be “Widely practiced by men in at least 75 countries and on four continents, and by women in at least 40 countries and on three continents.” (Dance. 4) Rhythmic Gymnastics is a style of dance and has gained a lot of recognition in the Olympics. Many people would argue that an Olympics sport and since people don’t see any dance competitions on the sports channels it should not be considered a sport, in general or in High Schools. This is false, there are a lot of tv shows that are based in dance, some examples are “So you think you can dance” and “Dancing with the Stars”, these are dance competitions. Just because they are not shown on networks like TSN doesn’t mean that they are not sports.
