My overall experience and reaction of Haydn’s “The Creation” was very pleasing. This was my very first time attending a formal concert, so I wasn’t very sure what to expect. The University and Master Singers sounded beautiful and completely synchronized. As far as the soloist there were two female and three male. I thought that both females had more complex and skilled arias compared to the males. Even during trios and singing with the choir, the female soloists out shined the men. With that being said, the female soloist sounded ten times better and talented then all three male soloist. At times especially towards the end of the oratorio I thought the orchestra was so loud that I could not hear over the choir or soloist. My favorite part of the oratorio was the third selection, when Adam and Eve came on stage. I felt that once Adam and Eve entered the stage, they brighten up the oratorio and it showed through their singing. The genre of this composition is considered an oratorio. According to the music notes an oratorio can be defined as a large musical composition for orchestra, choir, and soloists. An oratorio includes the use of a choir, soloists, an ensemble, different characters, and arias. The Creation represents and celebrates the creation of the world according to the Book of Genesis and Paradise Lost. The piece is structure into three different parts including recitatives and aria. A recitative can be described and speech-like dialogue and an aria is a lyrical sung for one person.
