Both the painting and the Lord of The Flies address the need for society. The Lord of the Flies is a novel about a bunch of English kids who crashed a plane on an island. They dented the island in a negative way. “All round him the long scar smashed into the jungle was a bath of heat.” (1) A boy named Ralph finds a shell (conch) and uses it to assemble the other kids to find ways to survive. “ Ralph grasped the idea and hit the shell with air from his diaphragm…A child had appeared among the palms, about a hundred yards along the beach.” (12-13) The conch is so powerful that it brings kids from far away. In the Lord of the Flies, Ralph is exploring the island, when he sees a shell which later is known as the conch, a valuable shell that symbolizes power and democracy. “A conch he calls it. He used to blow it and then his mum would come. It’s ever so valuable —”. (11) The conch is very loud and can gather people together because people would come from where they heard it coming from. The conch symbolizes democracy because whoever has it is able to have the freedom of speech. However, it also symbolizes civilization because when people have the right to speak, people can form a society and civilization. "The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee; the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist" (200). Roger’s action kills Piggy and the conch. He also kills the scientific thinking along with their ties to civilization. In the painting, the cat is in the water and looks to be analyzing some sort of seashell. The cat could be on some sort of lonely territory and maybe the seashell can get some other creatures on the island to come together.
