No matter where you look there will always be problems and these problems can bring the downfall of anything no matter how big or strong they seem. Since this book was made around the time of a world war William Golding used this book to provide insight to what the war was like. In Lord of the flies, Golding illustrates that the pursuit of power can ruin a society, through the examples of Jack, Ralph and the conch. This first part is about the conch and the power and order the conch holds. First, Ralph calls an assembly using the conch. During the assembly things get out of hand and Ralph yells, "shut up" and lifts the conch. (p22) Here the conch is used as a symbol of power by Ralph to get people to quiet down and listen. During the assembly when Ralph is talking Jack says, "I can sing C sharp”. (p22) This quote conveys the worry Jack has for not becoming the leader. This is extremely important because it shows his dominance amongst the choir boys since they know how impressive something like that is and sine nobody else on the island can do it. Also, the choir boys make up most of the group and whoever has them on their side has the power. Further on in Lord of the Flies Jack calls an assembly with the conch and uses this to discuss some problems. During this Jack says that "Ralph thinks they are all cowards”. (p126) since he has the conch ralph can' respond since that’s the rule. This is extremely important since Jack tries to use this to make all the hunters think Ralph dislikes them and thinks lowly of them. Although this isn't effective on Jacks part it shows once again Jacks fear of Ralph and how he knows Ralph can change the hunters before their final descent into savagery. Thus, this illustrates that Jack feels like he is losing power over the group and he tries to regain that power but fails and spares the society a bad
