The novel “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding, is an allegorical story in which the setting, the characters and some of the things that are present in the novel have symbolic meanings. The conch shell is one of the powerful symbols from the novel which symbolizes power, and unity. The presence of the Conch shell unifies the group of boys on the island which makes them civilized. “We can use this to call the others. Have a meeting. They’ll come when they hear us.” (12). The quote shows how the conch shell unites the children together. Also, whenever Ralph blows the conch the boys gather around for a meeting to listen to their chief. Secondly, the conch symbolizes order or rule. It symbolizes order in a way that Ralph said “And another thing. We can’t have everybody talking at once. We’ll have ‘Hands up’ like at school.’,’Then I’ll give him the conch, he can hold it while he’s speaking and won’t be interrupted except by me”(31) this means that the person who wants to speak must have the conch, and through the rule that Ralph made about the conch shell, the conch represents civilization and order. Thirdly, the conch symbolizes democracy. In the quote “Then Piggy was standing cradling the great cream shell and the shouting died down.”(12) this shows how piggy cares about the conch shell in which he treated it like his life rely on it, and through this, it shows that he who holds the conch with care and respect, then it is for sure that the power of the conch is used for good. Also, there is a connection between Piggy and the conch. The connection between Piggy and conch is that Piggy shows intelligence while the conch portrays as democracy and an order and when their connection combines it shows that it is the most important thing that a group must have in order to have a unity, and get things done very well and on the right
