Throughout history, many varieties of government have been formed, each with their own unique advantages and disadvantages. Some have faded away, while others remain strong forces in the lives of many citizens today. Three in particular have distinct qualities worth considering: unitary, confederate, and federal governments.
The first form of government, unitary, is defined as, "...a system of political organization with a central supreme government which holds the authority over and makes the decisions for subordinate local governments." (1) This definition means that the majority of power is held with the central government and that local or state governments have very little control over laws and regulations. One main advantage of this form of government is that it restricts the possibility of tyranny or a dictatorship forming; when power is spread equally throughout the country, it is much harder for a single individual to control the entire nation. This governing tactic also allows individual states or local areas to build their own separate identities, while still remaining a part of the whole country. Citizens have a greater ability to speak of their concerns and have them answered by local authorities. However, a confederacy also has its own disadvantages. When a government has a very weak central power, it becomes very difficult for that central party to enforce or pass laws, and local governments begin to take total control over their states. This can also cause states to secede from the central government, for they have more power than the central government
