Conflict In The Veldt By Ray Bradbury

As described by a politic, Christian Lous Lange, “Technology is a useful servant but a dangerous master.” This idea is explored in a science fiction story called “The Veldt”. An author of the story, Ray Bradbury, is also known for writing several other books. Some of the most popular books that he wrote are “The Martian Chronicles”, “Fahrenheit 451”, and “Something Wicked This Way Comes”. “The Veldt” is a short story that describes the world in which machines do everything for humans. Ray Bradbury uses conflict and personification in the story to demonstrate the dangers of technology.
Although several conflicts happen during the story, the main one is the opposition of the man and the machine. George’s kids constantly interact with the nursery and it keeps changing them in a negative way. Another great example of personification would be the entire house that George’s family lives in. The house is full of different machines that do all types of different things for George’s family. As Ray Bradbury mentions in the story, “The house is wife and mother now, and nursemaid.” The house personifies a mother figure throughout the story. By doing everything better than George’s wife, the house is able to replace a mother for the children and a wife for George.“By turning the house into a living, breathing entity through personification, Bradbury heightens the tension and the threat” ( Milne). George’s wife feels threatened by the whole idea that her family doesn’t need her anymore and that she was replaced by a house full of machines.
