In many novels, a character faces numerous problems. A conflict is an obstacle a character faces in a story that holds them back from their goal. For instance, in the novel Inside Out And Back Again, Ha and her family tried settling for a life in Alabama after fleeing Vietnam due to war. Once they arrived in Alabama, their life found many conflicts and challenges met. To sum up, throughout the novel Inside Out And Back Again, Ha and her family have problems while trying to create new lives in Alabama, but all these problems have solutions. One problem that Ha faces is a person vs person conflict against pink boy's name-calling, such as pancake face. In the poem “Mother’s Response” Mother strokes Ha’s head and chants. Even though Mother is unaware of what is happening with Ha, she still tries to comfort her. The author points out by stating, “Mother strokes my head. Chant, my child, Breathe in, peaceful mind. Breathe out, peaceful smile. She strokes my back. Chant, my daughter; your whispers will bloom and shelter you from words you need not hear.” (Lai). The quote reveals that Mother is very caring for Ha because she is trying her best to comfort her even without knowing what Ha is going through. In the poem, “Neighbors” Ha’s neighbors are unaccepting of the family. This leads them to vandalize their house with racist notes, insults, and nasty actions. The author acknowledges this by stating, “Eggs explode like smears of snot on our front door. Just dumb kids, says our cowboy. Bathroom paper hangs like ghosts from our willow. More dumb kids, says our cowboy. A brick shatters the front window, landing on our dinner table along with a note.” (Lai).
