S.E. Hinton is probably one of the best authors. She makes the list because when she was just 15 she wrote the first realistic fiction book for young adults. If that isn’t awesome, nothing is. She wrote the fabulous novel based on real events in her high school in Tulsa, Oklahoma. S.E. Hinton’s book, The Outsiders is about a greaser named Ponyboy. Pony is a teen from the 1960’s who is fed up with social classes. The Socs and the greasers are the two main social and economic ranks in society. Dally is a hardened greaser, a criminal proud of his record. Though however tough he might be, he will always have a soft spot for Johnny. This is why Dally feels bad about Johnny being in the hospital, in spite of the fact it wasn’t he himself that had put him there. Johnny went into a burning church (with Ponyboy) to save the children that were inside and now he is in the hospital. Dally is facing internal character vs. self conflict because he is worried about Johnny and faces guilt for not being able to help him. “Dally’s jaw line went white as he swore between clenched teeth.”(125) “‘We gotta win that fight tonight.’ Dally said. His voice was hard. ‘We gotta get even with the Socs. For Johnny.’”(125) These two quotes show the conflict because in the first one S.E. Hinton states the physical reaction of Dally when he hears about Johnny’s condition. The second exhibits that Dally was out for vengeance against the Socs. “We knew better than to talk to Dally when his eyes were blazing and he was in a mood like that.’”
