Non conformity by definition is failure or refusal to conform to a prevailing rule or practice. When in large groups everyone responds to the group differently. Typically the best people in society don’t conform with the majority easily. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Simon does not conform to the group of boys on the island. Similarly to Simon, Juror 8 in “Twelve Angry Men” doesn’t conform to the group. Simon and Juror 8 are similar because they both took a risk by not conforming to the rest of the group and aren't easily swayed one way. They are similar because they have the ability to stand up for what they thought regardless of what the other think. Without Juror 8, the boy on trial would have been sent to the electric chair because the other 11 had prejudiced opinions. During the trial the other 11 Jurors were ready to begin the meeting and vote guilty for the boy on trial without deliberation. But though out numbered, Juror 8 stuck to what he thought was right and voted the boy innocent, not letting anyone's opinion sway his decision. When he was at the window looking out the foreman said, “How about sitting down? The 8th juror does not hear the FOREMAN…” (Rose 10). It’s not easy for me to… send a boy off to die without talking…” (Rose 12). Even when all eleven other jurors were angry with him he didn’t cave in and give up on what he felt was right. Juror 8 responded differently by not going into it with his mind made up, he went in looking to hear what people thought. The rest of the men didn’t want to talk they wanted to vote guilty and send the boy off to the chair. Juror 8 was the savior of the boy on trials life through his courage and determination to stand up for what was …show more content…

Simon always seemed to help anyone, no matter who they were,“The littluns watched him inscrutably over double handfuls of ripe fruit,”(Golding 56). Simon did what he felt was the right thing to do regardless of what others thought, which was to try to bring order to the island. Simon risked his life for the better of the boys by discovering what the “beast” truly was. Even in his last moments, Simon always sought out to help, by releasing the parachute man this let, what the boys thought was the beast, to leave the island. He also took the risk of delivering the message to the boys, to rid the fear of the beast and hopefully stop their savage behavior, which costed him his life. After the death of Simon, the hope and goodness left the island, and later in the novel the boys were even willing to kill Ralph, “They’re going to hunt you tomorrow,” (Golding 188). Simon life on the island kept order, and kept most of the boys safe. Much like Juror 8 situation, Simon didn’t conform to a group, and just wanted to do what was best for the
