For me, Spanish is my tool to build a bridge that connects my American self to my Hispanic self. In this literacy narrative, I will embark on a voyage through my experiences of learning Spanish, a language that has opened up new worlds of understanding, connection, and personal growth. From stumbling over unfamiliar words and struggling to fit in, to embracing the beauty of the Spanish-speaking world, this narrative explores the challenges, triumphs, and profound impact that learning Spanish has had on my life. Speaking the language of my ancestors that I’ve longed to be connected to for as long as I can remember has allowed me to form meaningful relationships, and has given me the confidence in my culture I’ve always wanted. This whole journey has fostered understanding and forged bonds across all cultures connected through Latin America. Conversations that I have had with my own family that I’ve known my whole life revealed new perspectives, enriched my worldview, and deepened my appreciation for their own experiences within the Latino community.
