Where there is wealth there is power, so the affluent in the world have power over systems. The capitalist system, even though its fairly new, only favors and helps concentrate the wealth of the few wealthy individuals and their corporations. The maldistribution of wealth and power is evident in the United States because corporations use their resources to influence the political and economic system to further concentrate their wealth. Even though it is evident, that the rich continue to get richer and the poor even poorer, current economic arrangements are normalized so people don’t challenge them. Because this system only benefits big corporations, this discourages new and small businesses who want to enter the market, or they do but they struggle to compete with these big businesses. Even though most of the population believes that the market is competitive it’s not. Major corporations have always eliminated small and big businesses to eliminate their competition. They do so by merging with their competitor and buy them out or by a “stock swap” where two board of directors become one board. Megamergers create multinational corporations like Disney merging with Capital Cities/ABC and Exxon-Mobil merging with XTO. Even though megamergers are a possibility to expand and create more jobs they do not. These mergers further concentrate wealth because it eliminates competition, and the interlocking directorates allows them to control the prices of the goods and services; so, they can take full control of that market. Big Pharma is an example of this because this group now controls the prices of all medication in the United States without the government interfering and adjusting the prices. Other people have even called it a plutocracy where a government is run by and for the interests of the wealthy and corporations. Even though this country was built with the intention of being democratic- where the government is by and for the people and all voices will be heard equally it is not. When the Supreme Court ruled that special interest groups were exercising their right to free speech they left out that in allowing them to make donations, the poor working-class’ right to free speech would be abridged. That is why most of government economic aid has gone to help corporations; because corporations have resources to push their agendas whereas poor people do not have the same resources if they want change in the political
