The Constitution of the United States was created September 17, 1787 and ratified on June 21, 1788. It is considered to be the supreme law of the U.S. The whole plan of the Constitution was to draft a document to govern the colonies. Continental congress invited representatives of each colony to Independence Hall in Philadelphia to begin the writing process and draft. It is pretty amazing how this incredible document was created in such a short time for a new country and its still around today. Some countries follow this structure of government for themselves today. It is broken into seven articles, and it distributes power evenly not giving and branch too much power. This is the balance of liberty and justice as we know it. (Winters Soldiers & US Constitution Facts, 2015) The US Constitution is a controversial document in many ways. It was the first document created by the people for the people. It allowed voters to choose national leaders and state officials. This was never heard of before this. It also mandated the Supreme Court and to create a federal court system. This gave state courts the privilege to appeal to the Supreme Court. This gave Federal judges the final say. (Henretta, Edwards, & Self, 2012) The Bill of Rights was added to the Constitution with ten amendments. This was important and controversial because for the first time a government ensured the person fundamental rights of people such as freedom of speech and religion. It kept a balance between national and state governments. It protected the people individually something no government had done before. It is a great document that has definitely with stood time.
