Contemporary Issue Facing the Army in Leadership When talking about contemporary issue facing the Army in Leadership, we need to fully understand what is stated in ADP 6-22 Army Leadership (August, 2012). ADP 6-22 establishes what leaders need to be, know and do. The attributes are Character (Empathy), Presence (Confidence), Intellect (Sound judgment), Leads (Leads others), Develops (Develops others) and Achieves (Gers results). When it comes to Competencies we have the Oath to constitution, Combat Power, Influence Commitment, Positive and harmful form of leadership. My experiences might be a little different from those outside strategic units, but we still have the same challenges in leadership. I experienced a big change in regards to Leadership, NCO’s would be looked at with respect and someone with wealth of knowledge. Leaders, knew that it was more about their Soldiers and less about themselves. When I came in I was in the Intel community and always wanted to be an NCO so I can have an impact. I believe some of the challenges we are facing is that we don’t know how to discipline Soldiers. Basic training is different now than it was 10 years ago, Soldiers don’t go thru the same stress and don’t know how to handle tasks. When a Soldier did something wrong, NCO’s would just drop them and make them do push-ups or smoked them; usually that will fix the problem. Now we are not allow to discipline them in that manner and are taught to counsel them and be more involved with the Soldier. The new method just makes the leader be more creative so they can have an impact on the Soldiers. As NCO’s we need to take time to listen and don’t make decisions based on emotions. McLean (May 2012) wrote a monograph about leadership and stated the “Army is in state of transition after 10 years of war, and history has shown leadership lessons can be lost during a transition period. He believed that the Army leadership concept should just go back to the basics. If a leader was well equipped with leadership principles this will create good leaders for Soldiers. MAJ McLean strongly believe that leaders today have a great responsibility to revise the new leadership doctrine in preparation for future was but also use the example which have been proven success in the past.
