This is a report on Of Mice and Men a novella written by John SteinBeck and why the novellas controversial ending was actually justifiable. The theme of the story helps develop my opinion because it shows the dark side of the world. Another literary device is the characterization of the characters as they drive the plot and conflict of the story. Relationships are a major part of the story as the story revolves around the environment and dialogue between the people on the ranch. Curley is a very aggressive person, It is not only his aggressiveness that is the problem but whenever he receives the news of his wife’s death he immediately suspects Lennie with no evidence or idea of what happened. “I know who done it, he cried. That big son-of-a-bitch done it.” (SteinBeck 94). Curley from here on assumes that Lennie killed his wife with no evidence whatsoever and further threatens to injure Lennie with bullet holes to his guts. “I’m gonna get him. i’m going for my shotgun. Lennie is mentally challenged and does not understand things like we do. He gets into trouble more often than not and relies on George to get out of said predicaments while George having to deal with the aftermath of taking care of Lennie with no benefits “Christ knows George done ever'thing he could to jack you outa the sewer, but it don't do no good” (SteinBeck 99). Did you notice that when George found Lennie in the brush he was crying like a little kid, “Oh! George-George-George!” (SteinBeck 100).
