Bette Greene’s The Drowning of Stephan Jones depicts a heartbreaking story of a boy named Stephan and the struggles he faced in his small southern town. In the Novel, Stephan is portrayed as an outsider who doesn’t fit into his mainly Christian neighborhood because he is a homosexual man. Stephan’s partner Frank Montgomery, decided to move to the small town in Alabama in hopes for a better life. But what they didn’t expect was the immense hatred against them and their view on love. Stephan and Frank experienced conflict involving Andy and his friends, who were the popular teenagers in the town.
Assassination- the act of killing a political leader, often due to strong, differing beliefs. Sarah Vowell’s novel, Assassination Vacation, acutely explores three of the four American president assassinations; Lincoln, Garfield, and Mckinley. By strategically following the historical paths of the presidents and their killers, Vowell discovers a deeper understanding of the motives and causes behind each assassination. Throughout the book, Vowell travels to museums, historical landmarks trying to get a better grasp on these assassinations. One similarity between the three assassinations is they all relate to at least one of the four broad themes of social studies.

Popular interest was rekindled in the tale of Martin Guerre through the work of historian Natalie Zemon Davis’ book The Return of Martin Guerre, which interpreted the primary source literature in a new and original light. This interpretation has drawn sharp criticism from fellow historians such as Robert Finlay, who sees Davis’s work as misinterpreting and manipulating the evidence to allow for her original interpretation of the events. In the story “Your Question For Author Here” by Kate DiCamillo and Jon Sciezka, Joe Jones is forced to write a letter to the author of his choice and ask questions about their writing. But he doesn’t care about the project he ends up being very rude and demanding which sparks the conflict between Maureen O’Toople and him. This conflict is a person vs. person which leads to conflicts between these two people. In the beginning of the story, Joe Jones sends a very rude letter to the author of his choice for a literacy project. When she tells him that she will not answer his questions because he is being very rude he becomes bossy and tells her what to do.
During the course of the semester in my History 395 class we have read three historical monographs that covers a wide range of ordinary people in history. The first monograph we read was The Return of Martin Guerre by social and cultural historian Natalie Zemon Davis. The book covers a historical event about a 16th century French man named Martin Guerre who had his identity stolen by Arnaud du Tilh, and the reactions of the village and “his” family. The second monograph we read was Neighbors by political historian Jan T. Gross. The book is about a massacre in the small Jewish town of Jedwabne, Poland during World War II.
Telling a story. It seems simple, does it not? It has a beginning, middle, and end. There is a set plot, probably some morals, and a few characters. The ending may not give you many answers, but there will be an ending.
In The Return of Martin Guerre, Natalie Zemon Davis uses her sources through Jean de Coras to recreate and analyze the trials of Arnaud du Tilh, Martin Guerre, and his wife, Bertrande as a microhistory to gain a perspective and a glimpse of life for the average peasant during this time period. Natalie Zemon Davis’ sources are of diverse bases. Her main source, however is from Jean de Coras. Coras was a judge in part of the case in Toulouse. He was present, and his credibility enables him.
I agree with Tamara Steckler and accept her overall idea that society is responsible for the problem of juvenile crimes, and we cannot discuss or implement reform until society addresses the root problem of this issue. I support Steckler's argument because reform should be taken place to figure out the root cause of the high percentage rate of incarceration amongst adolescents. Black Dahlia Murder In 1947 the tragic loss of Elizabeth Short shocked many people all over the world. This wasn’t your typical murder, this murder had to have been planned out and thought about for a while before its happening. The “Black Dahlia Murder” is the biggest unsolved case in Los Angeles and is still an undergoing investigation. I have reason to believe that Dr. Gorge Hodel is the murderer behind the brutality of Elizabeth Short’s body.

Being a black woman raised in a white world, Ann Petry was familiar with the contrast in lives of African Americans and whites (McKenzie 615). The Street, centered in 1940’s Harlem, details these differences. While Petry consistently portrays Harlem as dark and dirty, she portrays the all-white neighborhoods of Connecticut as light and clean. This contrast of dark vs light is used in the expected way to symbolize despair vs success.
