Bette Greene’s The Drowning of Stephan Jones depicts a heartbreaking story of a boy named Stephan and the struggles he faced in his small southern town. In the Novel, Stephan is portrayed as an outsider who doesn’t fit into his mainly Christian neighborhood because he is a homosexual man. Stephan’s partner Frank Montgomery, decided to move to the small town in Alabama in hopes for a better life. But what they didn’t expect was the immense hatred against them and their view on love. Stephan and Frank experienced conflict involving Andy and his friends, who were the popular teenagers in the town.
Assassination- the act of killing a political leader, often due to strong, differing beliefs. Sarah Vowell’s novel, Assassination Vacation, acutely explores three of the four American president assassinations; Lincoln, Garfield, and Mckinley. By strategically following the historical paths of the presidents and their killers, Vowell discovers a deeper understanding of the motives and causes behind each assassination. Throughout the book, Vowell travels to museums, historical landmarks trying to get a better grasp on these assassinations. One similarity between the three assassinations is they all relate to at least one of the four broad themes of social studies.
Sonderkommandos who by Primo Levi standards were in a league with the SS officers, were the ones to put a stop to the horrors of Treblinka II, it made me question Levi’s testimony and question if his judgment was clouded by his opinion instead of facts. One thing that I know for sure is that Sonderkommandos may be viewed by many as perpetrators, but no one can question that they were heroes for having destroyed Treblinka II and stopping the killings of Jews by thousands. It’s essential to grasp the concept and understand the importance of The Shoah not only by a survivor or someone who was directly affected by The Shoah, but to learn about it by a second party. Amanda Knox Netflix Amanda Knox was accused of the murder of Meredith Kercher, roommate while studying abroad in Italy, and claims to be mistreated by the Italian Police. Agree: The day after the murder, Knox displayed unusual behavior that gave the police a hestadiate feeling about her. Later, the police have found that she took a shower after the roommate had been killed. Italian prosecutor Giuliano Mignini believe that Knox was having memories about the murder and the covering of the victim post mortem was a sign of a feminine touch. Knox was sent to prison based on the judge’s ruling along was another man.
The trail on the true identity of Martin Guerre has drawn the interests of scholars and historians for centuries, allowing for details of the case to be preserved right up to the present. Popular interest was rekindled in the tale of Martin Guerre through the work of historian Natalie Zemon Davis’ book The Return of Martin Guerre, which interpreted the primary source literature in a new and original light. This interpretation has drawn sharp criticism from fellow historians such as Robert Finlay, who sees Davis’s work as misinterpreting and manipulating the evidence to allow for her original interpretation of the events. In the story “Your Question For Author Here” by Kate DiCamillo and Jon Sciezka, Joe Jones is forced to write a letter to the author of his choice and ask questions about their writing. But he doesn’t care about the project he ends up being very rude and demanding which sparks the conflict between Maureen O’Toople and him. This conflict is a person vs. person which leads to conflicts between these two people. In the beginning of the story, Joe Jones sends a very rude letter to the author of his choice for a literacy project. When she tells him that she will not answer his questions because he is being very rude he becomes bossy and tells her what to do.
During the course of the semester in my History 395 class we have read three historical monographs that covers a wide range of ordinary people in history. The first monograph we read was The Return of Martin Guerre by social and cultural historian Natalie Zemon Davis. The book covers a historical event about a 16th century French man named Martin Guerre who had his identity stolen by Arnaud du Tilh, and the reactions of the village and “his” family. The second monograph we read was Neighbors by political historian Jan T. Gross. The book is about a massacre in the small Jewish town of Jedwabne, Poland during World War II.
Telling a story. It seems simple, does it not? It has a beginning, middle, and end. There is a set plot, probably some morals, and a few characters. The ending may not give you many answers, but there will be an ending.
I agree with Tamara Steckler and accept her overall idea that society is responsible for the problem of juvenile crimes, and we cannot discuss or implement reform until society addresses the root problem of this issue. I support Steckler's argument because reform should be taken place to figure out the root cause of the high percentage rate of incarceration amongst adolescents. In The Return of Martin Guerre, Natalie Zemon Davis uses her sources through Jean de Coras to recreate and analyze the trials of Arnaud du Tilh, Martin Guerre, and his wife, Bertrande as a microhistory to gain a perspective and a glimpse of life for the average peasant during this time period. Natalie Zemon Davis’ sources are of diverse bases. Her main source, however is from Jean de Coras. Coras was a judge in part of the case in Toulouse. He was present, and his credibility enables him.
Black Dahlia Murder In 1947 the tragic loss of Elizabeth Short shocked many people all over the world. This wasn’t your typical murder, this murder had to have been planned out and thought about for a while before its happening. The “Black Dahlia Murder” is the biggest unsolved case in Los Angeles and is still an undergoing investigation. I have reason to believe that Dr. Gorge Hodel is the murderer behind the brutality of Elizabeth Short’s body.
Her evident brainwashing, her obvious classism, and her continual display of her ego. What level-headed, rational, or sane person would judge a child so harshly by their name? Earlier, I had the misfortune of reading the manipulative article by Katie Hopkins. This article is the result of her disturbing viewpoint being given the opportunity to express her beliefs to the media. And it is repulsive.
Being a black woman raised in a white world, Ann Petry was familiar with the contrast in lives of African Americans and whites (McKenzie 615). The Street, centered in 1940’s Harlem, details these differences. While Petry consistently portrays Harlem as dark and dirty, she portrays the all-white neighborhoods of Connecticut as light and clean. This contrast of dark vs light is used in the expected way to symbolize despair vs success.
Too Scandalous for the Scandalous (#2) Sex! Sex was not a topic often discussed, especially by women, until Victoria Woodhull brought the subject up. Victoria Woodhull, an outspoken woman, brought up major issues, during the 1870s, such as sex, religion, marriage and women’s rights. Many did not agree with Victoria Woodhull views on these issues, but she did receive some support from Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton.
