When Kyle first started high school Kyle remembered how easy it was to copyright. Why go to the movies on the release day, when he can get the movie for free a week later? Kyle’s not a movie lover, he barely watches movies, but if he did he would get them for free. It’s so easy these days to watch movies, there are websites all over the internet such as, freestreamingmovies.com, topmoviesonline.cc, and housemovie.cc. These don’t even require the person to download anything; they are sites anyone can stream. They are all newer movie titles, they also include older movies. Since the music industry has begun to deeply hurt because of the increase of digital sound recording in the recent years. In the article, “Copyright Infringement Hurts the Economy, it states, “In 2005, the U.S. economy lost an estimated $12.5 billion in total output due to music piracy” (5). Furthermore, music piracy has lost the U.S. economy a whopping 71,060 jobs. The main jobs lost were the sound recording industry and sales companies. Music piracy has cost the U.S. workers $2.7 billion in earnings because of lost jobs and not as many records being sold. Who would have thought stealing a file and copying it could cause this much damage? Copyright has caused U.S. workers $16.3 billion worth of earnings to be lost annually. When estimated, 7.2 billion dollars would have gone to workers that work in the copyright industry as well as the retail companies, the other 9.1 billion dollars belongs to the other industries in the U.S. In the article “Copyright Hurts the Economy”, it states, “In 2005, piracy in motion pictures cost the U.S. economy an estimated 141,030 jobs” (5). Around 2/3 of the jobs lost were U.S. workers that were outside of the motion picture production and sales. This led to motion pictures to lose $1.903 billion in earnings due to piracy. As mentioned, piracy affects the economy music and movie sales, economy jobs, economy tax revenue reductions, and it damages the music industry. Piracy is extremely illegal and while get you in trouble, these days there are millions of copies of famous movies that have been pirated, such as Avatar. It is said there were more than 20 million copies of the movie Avatar that were illegal. This is an insanely large amount of movies that were illegal copies; remember this was all one movie. Hopefully one day there will not be a thing known as piracy. It is believed in the next decade or so that piracy will drop to an all-time low. The U.S government has been trying to stop piracy for many years, it has been a long drawn out war which will hopefully be ended soon. As one can see piracy is the cause why DVD, music, and movie sales are declining. Not only does piracy affect DVD, music, and movie sales to reduce, it also affects the economy’s music and movie sales, it affects economy jobs between the movie, music, and sales industry.
