Question 1: (25 points) Copyright versus Academic Integrity According to research, Copyright is a law set in place to protect the author(s) of a work; giving them exclusive rights to do as they please with that work. It also gives them the ability to also allow others to use, reproduce, comment on or prepare a new work based on their work, perform with that work, or transfer ownership of their work through renting or selling it (USCO, 2012). The whole purpose of a copyright is to establish boundaries while protecting the originator of the work, if not people could easily steal the work, claim it was their and claim monetary benefits from it. Academic Integrity and Copyright are very similar in that they are both meant to protect the rights of the originator of the work. Another similarity is that if violated there are very large sanctions which have to be paid or faced as a result of it. Academic dishonesty is very similar to a copyright violation because they both involve cheating and fraud (UMUC, 2015). In both cases, the violator is implying that something was created or originated by them when it was not. The only difference between the two I think is a person can exploit a copyright violation and make more of a monetary gain from it than they can from an Academic violation. Academic dishonesty can be intentional or non-intentional. It is mostly only at the academic level where as a copyright violation can apply to anything else other than an academic work and can usually land you in jail, be considered an infringement and a violation of the law, and cause you to pay large fines (Concordia University, 2012). There are exceptions to the copyright law un like the academic integrity rule, which can be considered fair use and allowed whereas no matter intentional or unintentional with the Academic Integrity rule you would still face
