In Cormac McCarthy’s book “All The Pretty Horses” it is a young love story that took place in the early western times with many different interesting events. There are many different types of themes expressed throughout the book, and conflicts that occur. In the book, some of those themes throughout it include coming of age, competing moral codes, loyalty, and wanting to belong. In the beginning of the book, John Grady, the main protagonist of the story, wanted to run away from his problems. His grandpa dying, mom running away from him and his dad, and his dad selling the ranch he grew up on. Running away from his problems is something that is very childish to do. Human beings need to take control of the matter and take care of things. Throughout the story he has come of age a lot and matured. John grady is usually in scenarios with characters that share opposing moral codes. For example, when John Grady falls in love with Alejandra her mother and father see it as only a affair, and do not allow it. John knows what’s right and what’s wrong and that he should probably stop seeing Alejandra but he still goes to see her anyways because he loves her. Do to this conflict he ends up having himself in jail because he knew what was right but did the wrong thing anyways. When the heart says one thing it does not mean it’s correct.
